Stirling and Dunfermline Railway

This line is closed, however track remains in place between Stirling and Alloa.

This railway has been re-opened between Stirling and Alloa for passengers and between Stirling and Kincardine Junction (and on to Kincardine) for freight.

This line ran west from Dunfermline through a former mining area to reach the large town of Alloa and then runs west to Stirling.



Description of route


From Dunfermline to Stirling. 

Dunfermline Upper


Here the line made an end on connection to the Dunfermline Branch (Edinburgh and Northern Railway). See that line for more details.



This was a two platform station. In the 1950s it gained a British Railways signalbox. Today nothing remains of the station, but the trackbed and junction are still obvious.

Oakley Junction


This was an east facing junction between the main line and a branch to the Comrie Colliery and Roxio Coking plant. There was a marshalling yard built on the branch just north of the junction. The Forth Ironworks were located just to the north of the yard, but closed as long ago as 1869 when the area was given over to coalmining only.

Comrie Colliery


This was on a short branch from Oakley. The line between Oakley and Alloa was closed and lifted before the line between Comrie Colliery and Dunfermline. The Roxio Cokeworks were located here. As the line passed through Comrie (just to the west of Oakley) it crossed a level crossing which was protected by a signalbox.



This station had timber platforms. Today very little remains of the station but the trackbed is still very obvious.



A signalbox remains at this former station and the line is crossed by a larger roadbridge just to the west of it.



Nothing remains of the former station here but the trackbed remains intact. Just to the north is the now closed Castlebridge mine.

Clackmannan (North)


Nothing remains of the former station here but the trackbed remains intact. The line was crossed by the Sauchie Waggonway just to the west of here.

Kincardine Junction


This is a west facing junction where the Kincardine Line (North British Railway) approaches from the south. There was a signalbox here located in the 'V' of the junction where today a rail rises vertically from the ground.

Alloa East Junction


A branch from the line ran north from this west facing junction to Tillicoultry. The junction was to the immediate east of Alloa station. Slightly further east, and on the north side of the line, was the Alloa locomotive shed. To the south of the line at the same point was the now demolished Alloa Brewery. The Tillicoultry branch was extended to Kinross by the Devon Valley Railway. The line was crossed by the Alloa Waggonway just east of the junction but west of the former brewery and the bridge which crossed the line is still in place.



This was a large island platform station with two bay platforms at its west end. The bays were used for services to Grangemouth (over the Alloa Swing Bridge) and Menstrie. The west end of the station was canopied and the line was crossed by a road bridge which still stands. The station building survived here until around the closure of the line to freight. There was a signalbox for the junction at the east end of the station on the platform.

Part of the site has now been built on but and what was for many years a disused track single track remained in place hugging the south retaining wall of the cutting the station was located in. The line has now re-opened to Alloa for passengers and through Longannet for freight.

Alloa Harbour Junction


This east facing junction was for a branch to Alloa Harbour. The line run south through a tunnel to the harbour. At there harbour there were extensive sidings serving a glassworks, the harbour and slightly further east a colliery. The area was already served by the sidings of the Alloa Waggonway and was later served by the Alloa Railway approaching from the west.

Alloa harbour was briefly the terminus of the line until it was extended west to Stirling. Passengers would leave the train here, use a ferry over the South Alloa and then the South Alloa Branch to continue their journey.

Alloa West Junction


At this east facing junction the Alloa Railway approached from the south. There was a signalbox to the south of the junction and immediately east a level crossing. As the line continued east to Alloa there appear to have been some sidings on the north side of the line.

Alloa Marshalling Yard 


Alloa Marshalling yard has been closed and dismantled. The main line, running parallel, has been retained but is disconnected at Cambus and dis-used. The yard was located on the South side of the main line, its east end being at the triangular junction of lines at Alloa West. From an east facing junction the Alloa Railway run south to Longcarse Junction. At this south facing junction is was met by two lines; a spur running east and then south from Alloa Yard; and also the Alloa Railway's line to the Alloa West coal yard (the Caledonian Railway goods terminus). During it's last days of operation the yard was used for locomotives rounding on their trains en route to Menstrie.

The photographs above show Alloa yard at the time of track uplifting, and the present condition as an industrial estate.



Cambus is presently the end of the line from Stirling. Most of the old platforms at Cambus station remain intact. Until recently the wooden footbridge by the level crossing at the East end of the station also still stood. Since the closure of the Alloa Marshalling yard and the level crossing a loop has been installed at Cambus, operated by a ground frame. The Signal box here has been closed and demolished.  Jeffray Wotherspoon tells me that the Class 27s started running to Menstrie in 1984 in place of the Class 20s.

The route is now out of use between Cambus and Alloa, and from Alloa to Dunfermline Touch Junctions it has been lifted. The route from Alloa to Dunfermline Lower (Kincardine Line (North British Railway)) remains out of use as far as Kincardine and in use from there to Dunfermline. 

Cambus Junction 


Cambus was formerly the junction for the Alva Railway. Today the Alva line has been cut back to Menstrie. The junction is at the West end of the former Cambus station and the junction faces East. There was a signal box here until about 1988. It was located on the South side of the line to the East of the occupational / level crossing. Some parts of the point rodding remain in the undergrowth. The box was closed when the loop was installed and Alloa Marshalling yard closed. 



This was a short lived station by a level crossing to the west of Cambus.

Manor Powis


After the line was singled a passing loop remained here. A signalbox existed to the north side of the line. To the south of the site was a colliery which was served from a west facing junction.



This two platform station was located on a gentle curve as the line turned from running north from Stirling to east to Alloa. Nothing remains of the station today but a single track (or at least sleepers as some of the track is lifted) remains in place.

North British Locomotive Shed and Goods


The North British Railway's locomotive sheds and goods yard was located to the north of Stirling station. To the north of here the line crosses a large viaduct.

Stirling North Junction


Immediately to the north of Stirling station the line met the Scottish Central Railway at a south facing junction.

Tillicoultry Branch

Alloa Workshops


Immediately to the north of Alloa East Junction was the Coop coal siding (which in the last days of the line was served as a long siding from Alloa West Junction). Slightly further north were the NCB's workshops at Alloa. These still stand, in other uses, but are no longer rail served.

Gartmorn Dam


A branch from a south facing junction ran east to serve a number of coal mines near Gartmorn Dam.



This station was located at Fishcross which today is to the north of the area called Sauchie. To the west of the old station is the Sauchie Tower and Sauchie Colliery which must have led to its name. The coal mines in the area were served by branches of the Alloa Waggonway and Sauchie Waggonway.



This short lived station was opened as a termporary terminus for the line while a vaiduct was completed. On extension of the line to Tillicoultry the station was closed.



The line was double track from here to Alloa. This was originally a terminus. There were a number of coalmines to the south of the site which were served by inclined plane tramways. The station had two platforms and had a level crossing to its east as the line was extended east as a single track railway to Kinross by the Devon Valley Railway.

The route was used by the North British Railway for its Glasgow to Perth services in competition with the Caledonian Railway's services over the Scottish Central Railway.
