This short branch served a large number of coal mines. The area today is largely farmed with small villages, but scarred by former coal mining.

Description of route 

Top 

From  Smeaton to Macmerry.

Smeaton

This station had a large island platform. The signalbox was extended in the early 1900s. The site is now part of a cycle route. The station buildings have been demolished.

Crossgatehall Halt

Ormiston

(Junction for the Gifford and Garvald Railway) There were a considerable number of mines by and to the west of the station.
