Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway

This line is open. Passenger services are provided by ScotRail from Inverness to Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Station remain at Keith, Elgin, Forres and Nairn.

Local area 

Top 

This line runs through an area of farmed countryside with a few large towns - Nairn, Forres and Elgin. There are large military airports at Kinloss and Lossiemouth to the north of the line.

Description of route 

Top 

From Nairn to Keith. The line was doubled between Nairn and Alves and single from Alves to Elgin but today the whole route is single with passing loops.

Keith Junction 

Top 

The Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway formed an end-on junction with the Great North of Scotland Railway at Keith. A joint station was operated. There was a bay platform at Keith at the west end which was used by the Buckie trains. The Highland Railway's signalbox at the west end of the station was mounted above the through track.
 
Keith West Junction

Also known as Aultmore Junction. The Buckie and Portessie Branch (Highland Railway) joined at this point, the junction faced east towards Keith. 
 
Tauchers Platform

Some timber remains of the platform facing.
 
Mulben

This station is closed but the station building still stands.
 
Orton 

Top

To the south of Orton a line, via Sourden, joined the Morayshire Railway at Rothes. This line was built by the Morayshire Railway and operated by the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway. The track is on the other side of the building shown from the road. 
 
Orbliston Junction

This was the junction for the Fochabers branch. The station building remains here.

Lhanbryde

This station is closed but the old station building remains standing.
 
Elgin (West) (HR)

The left photograph shows the replacement station building for the original Highland Railway building at this station. The GNSR station is to the right, behind the camera. The up platform shown here continues to form a through platform on the other station, which is now closed to passengers. The right photograph shows the GNSR line passing over the Highland Railway line as it heads down to Craigellachie. 
 
Mosstowie

Little now remains of this station except a short section of platform.
 
Alves

This closed station is well preserved. The station was located at the eastern end of double track running east from Inverness. From here to Elgin the line was single track with passing places. Today the line of the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway is single throughout. This is the junction for the Hopeman Branch
 
Kinloss 

Top 

This closed station retains its platforms and station buildings. The signalbox survived into the 1980s.

It was the junction for the briefly open Findhorn Railway which may have left from an east facing junction to the east of the station.

Forres 

Top 

The original station here became a goods line bypass when the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway was constructed. The new station was built on a new east-west line and had platforms on each side of a triangular junction with the Perth line. The Perth-Elgin or east curve had only one platform the others having two. The goods bypass survived as a siding approached from the east until recently.  

The passing loop here is now by the East box outwith the station area.

Nairn 

Top

The Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway joined the Inverness and Nairn Railway at this point. To reach the station the line had to cross the viaduct shown here. The viaduct was built with provision for double track, but today only supports one track.
