Devon Valley Railway
This railway is closed.
This line runs through farmland in Fife. There
were coalmines at Sauchie through to Dollar. The section of line around Rumbling
Bridge and Crook of Devon was very expensive to build with many river crossings
required and cuttings through sand.
Description of route
From Alloa to Kinross. The section between
Alloa and Tillicoultry was built by the Stirling
and Dunfermline Railway and extended by the Devon Valley Railway to Kinross.
The line started from an end-on junction with
the Tillicoultry Branch of the Stirling
and Dunfermline Railway.
Dollar had a single platform with a passing
loop to its east. To the east of Dollar was the Dollar Mine which provided coal
for the Kincardine Powerstation and kept the line open as far as Dollar after
the line closed as a through route.
Today the platform remains but no buildings
stand. There may still be a gradient profile post in position complete with
Rumbling Bridge (New)
The straight through station at Rumbling Bridge
was opened when the line was extended west from Rubmling Bridge leaving the
old station on a short branch.
The new station had two, very slightly staggered,
platforms and a large signalbox. The goods yard was to the north of the line
approached from the west.
Today the station's site is largely occupied
by housing the approach road to which runs along the former trackbed from the
south end. The westbound platform remains intact.
Rumbling Bridge (Old)
This station was closed when the line was extended
west. The terminus was to the north of the later line and at a higher level.
The site is now a house.
Crook of Devon
This station had a single platform and was
to the west of a level crossing. A level crossing gatepost remains standing.
This station was built to serve a nearby large
house. The platform and goods platform were timber and still stood on the early
At this north facing junction the line met
the Fife and Kinross
Railway. A new station was opened just to the north which replaced the older
Kinross (Hopefield) station.
