A History of Britain’s Railways
This line is partly open, and only carries
freight. It was built to bring Iron Ore from around Loftus to the River
Tees for use at Bell's ironworks at Port
Clarence. A rail-served steelworks remains open at Skinningrove.

Loftus station was formerly called Lofthouse.
The abortive Cleveland Extension Railway extended the line south from Brotton.
The earthworks were continued for some distance but the track was not laid as
