Joseph Mitchell was understudy to Thomas Telford on the building of the Caledonian Canal and a number of Highland Roads.

He went on to be engineer to the Highland Railway and it's various forbears, branches and associated lines such as;

1861 Inverness and Perth Junction Railway
Dingwall and Skye Railway
