This line was an extension of the North Midland Railway to York. George Hudson was instrumental in its creation. He was able to acquire access through the city walls of York to an excellent station site. This site was later given up for a larger site outside the city walls. Spurs were built onto the Leeds and Selby Railway.
The company built a branch to Scarborough and Pickering to link with the Whitby and Pickering Railway.
