Closure of lines 1960-1970

During the 1960 a major re-appraisal of the railways was undertaken, culminating with the Beeching Report. The organisation of the railways had been poor since their inception; there were no properly organised facilities for marshalling trains or tracing the whereabout of specific loads.  This had led to the loss of much business as goods dispatched were either delayed or lost frequently; many road carriers were able to compete much more effectively. So in the early 1960s a number of marshalling yards were built to replace the widespread small and inconvenient yards which were originally built by the small companies in the 1800s. Some suburban routes were electrified as this is cheaper to run than both steam and diesel trains.

However the cost to the country of running the railways was still too high. The drastic decision to close all lines which were not profitable was taken and widespread closure to both passengers and goods and land sales started. Some of the new marshalling yards were rendered redundant by this approach. Beeching had recommended the adoption of the name "British Routes" and the introduction of bus services along the closed trackbeds, but this suggestion was not taken up. However he had also recommended that traffic corridors for both freight and high-speed long distance passengers services, this was accepted and the Freightliner terminals were built. Although many of us lament the passing of the countryside railways we should not forget that the costs of running the nationalised railway service were crippling the country; action was required and quickly.
