Withdrawl of services 1950-1960

The effects of improved road transport were being felt and many country districts were now better served by the new bus companies. As a result many countryside lines were closed to passengers but struggled on for another decade carrying occasional freight trains. Diesel locomotives and Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) were introduced to cut costs. The DMU's inception allowed the closure of many turntables and locomotive sheds with consequent staff and cost reductions.
