Trunk Lines 1840-1870

These were the "Railway Mania" years. By now it had been realised that railways could provide a convenient form of transport throughout Britain. Many lines were promoted to join the cities together. A number of other less worthy schemes were also promoted and many schemes were over-subscribed by investors. Following a stock-market crash fewer lines were promoted with the result that chiefly profitable main lines were built. Many of these lines are still open.
