Newcastle and Darlington Railway

This line is still partly open, and partly mothballed. It is open between Newcastle and Pelaw, and between Tursdale Junction (to the north of Ferryhill) and Darlington. It is mothballed between Tursdale Junction and Pelaw but is being re-instated to ease the traffic on the Durham route to Gateshead.

Chronology

Top

This line runs between Newcastle (originally it ran to Gateshead before the Newcastle High Level bridge was opened) and Darlington. It incorporates parts of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway (at Washington), the Durham Junction Railway (between Washington and near Leamside) and the Clarence Railway (at Ferryhill). Today the main line though Durham is used in preference to the Ferryhill to Pelaw section, that part being mothballed but undergoing re-instatement to relieve the Durham route.
