London and North Western Railway This company was formed on 1 Jan 1846 by the merging of the London and Birmingham Railway (opened 1838), Grand Junction Railway (opened 1837) and the Birmingham and Manchester Railway. By a series of further purchases (e.g. Lancaster and Carlisle Railway) and new line building it was to become one of the foremost railways in England. For many years the company's London Euston station was the only terminus in London for the North. |

Its main line is today the West Coast Main Line (WCML) from London Euston to Carlisle Citadel. The remainder of the WCML route on to Glasgow was owned and operated by the Caledonian Railway which was a close business partner. In 1923 the London and North Western Railway became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. In 1948 this became part of the nationalised British Railways network. On today's privatised network Virgin Trains operates over much of the network.
