Description of works

Top

The Llanwern Steelworks was an Integrated Ironworks, Steelworks and Strip Steel Mill. Although the ironworks has closed half of the original works remains and is doing better than ever. Aside from the loss of the iron ore trains that utilised the rail network in the past the rail link is in even more use now than it was before. Shipping steel slabs from around the country to be processed here is a continuous operation and the works is presently (March 2004) rolling over 50,000 tons a week, all of which is sourced by rail. The works is not closing in the foreseeable future.
