Hopeman Branch
(Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway)
 

This railway is closed to passengers. Track still exists between Alves and just south of Burghead (New) Station. Passenger services are still provided by ScotRail between Inverness and Aberdeen. Freight operates intermitantly to Roseisle, near Coltfield.

Burghead station

This line runs to north from Alves to the coast at Burghhead, where there is a harbour and maltings, and then east to Hopeman.

Description of route

Top

From Alves to Hopeman with a branch to Burghead Harbour (known as the Harbour extension although it was actually the terminus of the original line before extension to Hopeman).

Alves Junction

Top

This is an east facing junction to the west of Alves. Here the branch joined the former Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway.

Coltfield Platform

This was a single platform halt.

Roseisle

This was s single platform halt. Nearby is a works served by a siding on the line.

Burghead Junction

This south facing junction was where the original line (which terminated at Burghead (Old)) was joined by its extension east to Hopeman.

Burghead (Old)

Top

This was a fairly extensive station. Facilities included a two-road engine shed. Several tracks ran to the harbour.

Burghead (New)

This view (left) looks towards Hopeman. About 200 yards behind the camera is the buffer stop for the remaining part of this branch. Until recently the track continued through the view here and to the grain silos which can be seen in the background. The was a road bridge at the end of the platform.

Cummingston

This was a short lived single platform station. There was also a siding here.

This view looks from the buffer end towards Burghead.
