Glasgow and South Western Railway This line ran between Glasgow, Paisley, Ardrossan, Ayr, Kilmarnock, Dumfries and Carlisle. Later additions include Greenock, Stranraer and Girvan. The company was formed by an amalgamation of the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway and the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway. The new company went on to purchase and fund many more lines. It was also known known as the "Sou' Western". |

This line ran through mostly farmland but served a considerable number coalmines in the Ayrshire area.
This line served Ayrshire and the Firth of Clyde ports. The mainline ran from Glasgow to Kilmarnock and on to Carlisle. The company also owned a steamer fleet operating passenger, goods and mail services on the Firth of Clyde.
