This line was closed. A Section has been re-opened by the South Tynedale Railway between Alston and Kirkhaugh. Today the nearest main line station is at Haltwhistle.

Description of route

Top

From Haltwhistle on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway south to Alston. There was a junction at Lambley with the Earl of Carlisle's Waggonway system.

Alston

The preserved Alston station has a single platform, and a run-around loop. It had a timber overall roof.

Lambley

To the north of the station there was a junction with the Earl of Carlisle's Waggonway system. The passenger line crossed over the very large and preserved Lambley Viaduct on its way north to Haltwhisle.

Coanwood

A platform and buffer stop remain at this small station.

South Tyne Viaduct

This is a substancial viaduct.
